As July gets underway, I wish we could be talking about major theatrical releases. Mulan and Tenet were meant to open this month, only to get pushed back til August (for now). Still, there’s a lot of fun stuff is coming out in July, including a theatrical offering that might actually provide some guilty fun. If it gets released, that is.
Remember: please stay safe!
Hamilton | Disney+
Release: July 3
Director: Thomas Kail
Starring: Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom, Jr., Anthony Ramos
The smash Broadway hit finally comes home. But no, this is not a film adaptation of the play. Rather, it’s essentially a taping of the live show. It features the original cast, including creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, and bows on Disney+ this Friday. The special wasn’t supposed to drop til late next year. But due to the pandemic (most likely), Hamilton now comes home while we’re all stuck there anyway. Knowing almost nothing about the show, I can only say that as a fan of musicals, I hope this one lives up to the hype.
Unhinged | theatrical
Release: July 10
Director: Derrick Borte
Starring: Russell Crowe, Jimmi Simpson, Caren Pistorius
Unhinged is hoping to be the first movie of the post-COVID Shutdown Era. We’ll see how that goes. As of this writing, the movie is hanging onto its July 10 release date. Too bad most theaters won’t be open to show it. Those that are, however, seem to be getting a glorified DTV/cable movie that somehow stars… Russell Crowe? I like Crowe a lot, so maybe my optimism is skewed because of that. Does Unhinged look like a new classic? Not at all. Could it be a guilty pleasure? Sure.
Greyhound | Apple TV+
Release: July 10
Director: Aaron Schneider
Starring: Tom Hanks, Elisabeth Shue, Stephen Grahame
Originally meant for theaters, Greyhound debuts via Apple, who’s become increasingly aggressive in going after projects with big names. This one: Tom Hanks, in a World War II tale that Hanks himself wrote. Hanks plays a US Navy commander drawn into combat during the early days of America’s involvement in World war II. Schneider’s name isn’t well-known, but his 2009 feature Get Low was an offbeat charmer. Greyhound seems to be in a different vein, so I’m not sure what to expect here. Increasingly, movie stars mean less and less at the box office. But on streaming, a name like Tom Hanks gives me hope that the movie might be OK.
Radioactive | Amazon Prime
Release: July 24
Director: Marjane Satrapi
Starring: Rosamund Pike, Anya Taylor-Joy, Sam Riley
It’s always nice to see Rosamund Pike, and in Radioactive, she plays Marie Curie. The film follows the story of Curie and her husband, Pierre. As the couple’s scientific and romantic endeavors take off, their breakthroughs will change human lives forever. Also starring Anya Taylor-Joy, the movie will be available on Amazon Prime towards the end of the month. Had it received more press, this might’ve been in the awards conversation for at least some below-the-line categories, like Production Design or Costume Design.
