As the world crumbles around us, June brings us some exciting and, frankly, relevant offerings from streaming and VOD providers. As theaters remain closed (though potentially not for long), here’s a look at what you can expect to enjoy at home this month.

Remember: please stay safe!

Da 5 Bloods | Netflix

Release Date: June 12
Director: Spike Lee
Starring: Chadwick Boseman, Delroy Lindo, Paul Walter Hauser
Spike Lee is back with his first movie since BlackKklansman, the 2018 feature that finally netted him a long-awaited Oscar. Teaming with a strong cast, including Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) and recent breakout/BlackKklansman co-star Paul Walter Hauser, Lee tells the story of a group of Vietnam War veterans. Decades after the conflict, the group goes back to Vietnam to find the remains of their squad leader. There, they must wrestle with demons from their past. The film promises to be another winner from Lee, who’s experiencing a late-career renaissance that we’re lucky to be witness to. Especially in these times, Lee’s voice is more necessary than ever.

Artemis Fowl | Disney+

Release Date: June 12
Director: Kenneth Branagh
Starring: Ferdia Shaw, Josh Gad, Judi Dench
One of the more high-profile casualties of Coronavirus delays, the long-awaited adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s novel hits Disney+ this week instead of theaters. Nevertheless, Artemis Fowl looks like a lot of fun. Boasting a fun cast including Josh Gad and Judi Dench, the movie stars newcomer Ferdia Shaw as the titular hero. Directed by the ever-reliable Kenneth Branagh, this children’s fantasy adventure should be diverting enough for the entire family. With the VOD success of movies like Trolls and Scoob!, I imagine Artemis Fowl will do boffo numbers for Disney’s streaming service.

The King of Staten Island | Video-on-Demand (VOD)

Release Date: June 12
Director: Judd Apatow
Starring: Pete Davidson, Marisa Tomei, Bill Burr
Judd Apatow is back in the director’s chair. Though his best days are likely behind him (I doubt the man will ever top the one-two knockout punch of his debut films, The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up), his latest offering looks pretty good. The King of Staten Island, loosely based on star Pete Davidson’s own life, follows an underachiever who dreams big but whose life is thrown for a loop when his single mother (Tomei) starts dating a fireman (Burr). Another movie that was supposed to drop theatrically, Universal moved it to VOD, where it will probably find more of an audience in a marketplace that increasingly marginalizes non-tentpoles at the multiplex.

7500 | Amazon Prime

Release Date: June 19
Director: Patrick Vollrath
Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Aylin Tezel,
Remember Joseph Gordon-Levitt? He had a bit of a moment in the early part of the 2010s, with movies like (500) Days of Summer, Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, and his own directorial effort, Don Jon. Then he kind of fell off the face of the Earth. But he’s back now with the airplane-highjacking thriller 7500. Named after the pilot code for an in-air highjacking, the movie is, well, about a highjacking. Not sure what more you need to know. But JGL is a good actor, even if we haven’t seen much of him lately, and while plane highjackings can be a raw subject matter for many audiences (understandably so), this one seems interesting enough to be worth a stream.
