Bombastic and overstuffed, these two-and-a-half-hour showcases of the latest in sound design and visual effects have taken the box office by storm despite true fans of these films being somewhat hard to find. But if people keep showing up to the tune of over a billion dollars at the box office, not to mention vast sums in home video and merchandising sales, the corporate juggernaut continues to chug along.
