It’s time for our commentary thread on the 94th Annual Academy Awards. The awards start in 20 minutes, so of course they’ve already given out several awards!
Beyoncé opens with the song from King Richard, from the tennis court in Compton. Cool. Would’ve liked to see the acceptance speech for Animated Short though.
There's a chance AMPAS really loves King Richard and it walks away with Song, Actor, and Original Screenplay. Don't think so, but I'm already only hitting .500.
Just a reminder: this is the year that the Oscars have relegated several categories to a pre-show ceremony that's already happening. So here's to catch us all up on what we've missed:
Best Live-Action Short went to The Long Goodbye, which I believe makes Riz Ahmed an Oscar-winner. Best Doc Short went to The Queen of Basketball, and Best Animated Short went to The Windshield Wiper.
Costner should win an Oscar for this Best Director introduction.
Will Smith just walked up on stage and sucker punched Chris Rock live on stage.
Zack Snyder walking away with both Audience choice awards.
Wait, we’re those just the nominees? I’m so confused about this whole ceremony.
Screenplay awards go to Bellfast and CODA. Guessing CODA has Picture secured at this point.
We don’t talk about Bruno, though.
CODA wins its first of the night -- Troy Kotsur for Supporting Actor, as expected.

The Kotsur late-phase rally had been like a force of nature! Curious what we’re to make of Best Pictute at this point.
And Dune won Cinematography. That's six.
Crazy that a movie can be the best in six different categories but apparently not be one of the five best-directed movies of the year.
