Can "Terminator: Dark Fate" Change the Past?
Despite the low box office and poor critical reception of the awkwardly named Genisys, Paramount is returning to the Terminator well. Today we got our first look at the trailer for Terminator: Dark Fate. From the trailer, it is clear that Paramount is hoping the names associated with the film will set it apart from its subpar predecessors. James Cameron has returned to the franchise to produce this new installment. And Tim Miller (Deadpool) will be taking on directing duties behind the camera. Unfortunately, there's little evidence in the trailer that these production side changes will make much of a difference on screen. Judging from what we see in the trailer, the plot of the movie is pretty straight forward. Sarah Connor is working with a new robot (Grace, played by Mackenzie Davis) to keep a young woman (Dani Ramos, played by Natalia Reyes) alive. Getting back to basics feels like exactly what the franchise needs. But this first look does not leave us hopeful. The one thing that does have us hopeful about the movie is when it takes place. Chronologically, Terminator: Dark Fate will take place after Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Maybe Paramount learned something from the success Blumhouse and Universal had with Halloween in 2018. The best thing this movie can do is sever itself from the mythos of everything that Terminator has done since 1991. The close it is to a T2 sequel, the better. Terminator: Dark Fate sees the return of Lina Hamilton as Sarah Connor and Arnold Schwarzenegger as the T-800. From Paramount:
